I cannot count the times I have heard people tell me that video game consoles are holding back the progress of PC gaming. That is a large and thorny topic of discussion. So today I want to briefly focus on the overwhelmingly common example that people present to me: comparisons like this.
For those who don’t recognize the game immediately, it is Grand Theft Auto 4. On the bottom is the stock console version. And on the top is the PC version with high-quality graphical mods installed. Because the unmodded PC version does not look like that whatsoever.
And so this is why consoles are holding back PC games? Because almost seven year old hardware of the PlayStation 3 cannot compete graphically to a current PC with more recent hardware resources? Oh wow how shocking.
Consoles do not have the luxury of hardware upgrades the way PCs do, and so console games ported to PCs rarely take advantage of the graphical capabilities of those computers. But would someone please explain to me how a lack of cutting-edge graphics is somehow ‘holding back PC gaming’.
