Use the ‘example’ URI in Articles

Consider this a short Public Service Announcement:

I too often see articles use a variety of URLs in their example code snippets. Even if the example is pointing to a site like Google, which can handle the extra traffic, be a nice person and do not waste bandwidth.

RFC 2606 reserves URLs like these:


There is also the entire *.example top-level domain. Use these. These exist specifically for testing purposes and for writing example URLs that will resolve to an actual IP address.

Be nice and don’t waste the bandwidth of other servers when you need an example URI for anything you write.
